Women In Construction (WIC) Week occurs every first week of March and celebrates female professionals in the industry. To celebrate WIC Week this year, 爱神传媒 hosted the second annual W膩hine in Construction P膩驶ina. The event took place at the Entrepreneurs Sandbox in Kakaako on March 4. Our Women’s Network (W-Net) hosted the event, motivating attendees to think about professional growth. From engineers to CEOs, over 90 participants networked and engaged in the discussion revolving around the topic, 鈥淓levate Your Career.鈥

爱神传媒 Project Manager Naomi Mercuris facilitated the conversation which covered topics such as mentorship, growth and development and challenges. Each guest speaker shared personal experiences as women in construction and valuable life lessons that led them to their current positions. The W膩hine in Construction P膩驶ina panel included four successful female industry professionals:

  • Allie Ackerman | Operations Manager at 爱神传媒
  • Dawn Szewczyk | Vice President and Operations Manager at HDR
  • Melissa Humphrey | Project Manager at Layton Construction
  • Kapiolani Street | Senior Project Engineer at Castle and Cooke Homes Hawaii

鈥淓levating your career in construction starts with taking care of yourself and having a commitment to self-improvement with humility. The construction community is full of people who want to train and mentor others. Seeking connection with this community will make you a better builder and leader, which will ultimately鈥痗ontribute to the success of your project teams and your career overall.鈥

– Allie Ackerman

After the panel, the event expressed the importance of paving the way for the leaders of tomorrow. Sacred Hearts Academy students spoke about Girls Got Grit, a mentorship program that cultivates the next female STEM leaders. The program facilitates connections between high school students, professional mentors and companies. Guests eagerly supported this initiative, recognizing the value in talent retention and establishing a pipeline for workforce development in Hawaii.

To conclude the event, the W膩hine in Construction P膩鈥檌na event left attendees with a unifying message. Together, we’re building more than just structures. We’re building a legacy of inclusion and progress that will shape the industry for generations to come.鈥

爱神传媒 hosted an Executive Safety Charrette with some of their valued mechanical, electrical and plumbing trade partners. Throughout the day鈥檚 program, 爱神传媒 presented their vision, commitment to safety and held honest discussions concerning strategies for elevating safety on our collective projects. 26 attendees across 12 different companies provided valuable insight and a 360-degree review of 爱神传媒鈥 safety program and culture.

Creating a Company-Wide Safety Culture

Throughout the day鈥檚 discussions, the attendees engaged in skits, open dialogue and brainstorming sessions to share experiences about safety on jobsites. One breakout session focused on incorporating safety into a company鈥檚 culture, which prompted recognition of what success in safety looks like on a project. Below are some findings:

  • Jobsite orientations should be personal, interactive, available in multiple languages and integrated into the field with a walk when possible.
  • Stair towers instead of ladders are appreciated by the trades.
  • Lighting on jobsites makes a huge impact.
  • Logistics planning and hoists are money well spent.
  • Ensure there are enough restrooms and that they are well placed.
  • Well thought out traffic flow for deliveries can make or break a project.
  • Communication between 爱神传媒 and trades needs to be concise and frequent. Knowing one’s audience and reach as many people as possible to keep the message flowing to the field.
  • Appreciation events should be personalized and more frequent.
  • Tiered trades often fly under the radar and require management effort from all levels.
  • Be realistic about safety professional requirements instead of basing them off an arbitrary number of people on-site.

Trade partner experts also shared their insights and research findings on emerging safety trends, accident prevention methodologies and innovative safety technologies. These discussions surrounded the top three trends for all 爱神传媒 Mid Atlantic Region projects as well as the leading cause of potentially catastrophic or significant incidents or fatalities (SIF), which were incidents during rigging operations.

The safety trend breakout session focused on what 爱神传媒 is doing as leaders in the industry to help curb the trends and send their people home safely. After showcasing the above trends, industry partners discussed some additional areas of focus that included:

  • Owner furnished, contractor installed scopes of work.
  • The management of tiered trade partners for all contractors on-site.

To close the breakout session, 爱神传媒 challenged all companies and their executive teams to look at how they can take their employees out of harm鈥檚 way by eliminating unsafe choices and minimizing risk.

360 Review of 爱神传媒’ Safety Program

To end the day, 爱神传媒 held a 360 review of their safety program to discuss innovations, pain points and ways to explore potential improvements to the program. Below are some of the suggestions:

  1. Share more applicable lessons learned with trade partners across projects.
  2. Compare apples to apples when selecting bids.
  3. Site setup and logistics plans make all the difference to the trades.
  4. Consider adding a double triggered bandsaw mandate on 爱神传媒 projects.
  5. Try not to change site policy because of an injury, but instead:
    • Discuss safety professional numbers based on risk, not just employees on-site.
    • Site lighting vs. task lighting requirements (west coast vs east coast approach).
    • Discuss weekly look-a-heads and HRA鈥檚 that may impact multiple trades weekly.
    • Eliminate redundancy in paperwork and systems where applicable.

With continuous efforts and a proactive approach, organizations can create safe environments for their employees and set new standards for safety excellence in their respective companies. 爱神传媒 and their trade partners look forward to implementing some outstanding ideas presented during this charrette on both current and future projects.

“In the dynamic world of construction, safety isn鈥檛 just a priority 鈥 it鈥檚 a shared responsibility that unites tradespeople, managers and stakeholders alike in a common goal: Ensuring that every worker returns home safety at the end of the day. Safety is not proprietary and there should not be any trade secrets.”

On Friday, September 15, 爱神传媒鈥 Mid Atlantic Region honored 15 trade partners at the second annual Trade Partner Appreciation Awards Luncheon. Initiated by the Region鈥檚 Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Community (DEIc) forum, the luncheon supported, honored and celebrated the trade partner community.

From excellence in safety to design partner of the year, trade partners were nominated by 爱神传媒 project teams to celebrate outstanding performers in a variety of categories. A regional selection committee then reviewed the nominations to determine the best of the best.

The trade partners recognized for the 2023 Trade Partner Appreciation Luncheon include:

Excellence in Procurement 鈥 Welch and Rushe

On the National Institute of Standards and Technologies (NIST) Building 245 project, 爱神传媒 had to look for alternative contractors to complete the mechanical and plumbing scope of work. With very limited time to receive a proposal from Welch and Rushe and to confirm they could have a crew on-site within two weeks, Welch and Rushe guaranteed that they could complete the project and mobilize in such a confined timeframe.

Excellence in Contract Administration 鈥 Helix Electric and Hercules Fence

All three National Institutes of Health (NIH) project teams nominated Helix Electric for their ability to navigate and excel in managing three unique projects with different contract types. Helix has assisted 爱神传媒 greatly in navigating the unique requirements of NIH and has been crucial in the contract procurement process for all NIH projects to meet their Small Business Enterprise (SBE) goals. They are a high-performing team and their ability to manage three very unique projects has been impressive.

The Hercules project management team was proactive and willing to join in on several coordination calls with the owner and design team to ensure that the design changes that came late in the Compass Data Center project would still maintain both the owner’s and the client’s security needs. Hercules went above and beyond to invite their manufacturers to these meetings for a clear line of communication so any changes could be addressed quickly.

Small Business of the Year 鈥 Mohawk Bridge and Iron

Nominated by the Bladensburg Bus Garage project, Mohawk Bridge and Iron set the pace with 爱神传媒’ self-work crews, staying out in front of all foundations and slab-on-grade and installing rebar as fast as 爱神传媒 crews can install the formwork. Typically, complicated rebar in pile caps, grade beams and slabs can be a cumbersome and challenging scope of work. Working with Mohawk made for a straightforward and well executed scope thanks to the attention to detail and overall knowledge up front.

Best New Trade Partner 鈥 Glass 爱神传媒 Resource and John H. Hampshire, Inc.

Glass 爱神传媒 Resource (GPR) led by example as one of our top design-build trade partners on the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Surgery, Radiology and Laboratory Medicine (SRLM) project by setting a precedent of detailed design standards and developing a high-trust owner relationship. They committed to the design-build approach by working in parallel with our architect of record to help steer the team towards highly coordinated design to ultimately avoid re-work during construction. GPR led the effort by being the first partner to have their drawing sets ready for others to emulate and forward everyone鈥檚 coordination efforts. Additionally, GPR built immediate trust with the owner and made recommendations towards alternate glass products to the owner that have better longevity and performance at no cost. GPR was also nominated by our estimating department for being proactive during the procurement phase in generating RFI’s to assist the owner in finalizing the design as well as actively participating and developing value engineering solutions.聽

John H. Hampshire quickly adjusted to the 爱神传媒 way faster than any new contractor working at East Campus Building 3 (ECB3). Their quick response time from the office and field teams, their professionalism, safety record, proactive administration and manpower supplementation are reasons John H. Hampshire was nominated as a best new trade partner.

Design Partner of the Year – Gensler

爱神传媒 has worked closely with Gensler on over 30 projects across the region, including a dozen design-build projects. Gensler has remained a trusted and steadfast partner on our design-build projects, including the ECB3 project at Ft. Meade, earning them the Design Partner of the Year award.

Innovation Award 鈥 Total Civil Construction

Total Civil has dealt with a challenging, small site on the NIH 40A project, surrounded by active main roads on two sides of the project, a loading dock that was required to be fully operational and an existing active research laboratory encompassing all four sides of the site. Total Civil successfully completed the site utilities and earthwork scopes while maintaining a functioning loading dock adjacent to the project and limited impacts to traffic. During their work, Total Civil maneuvered around unforeseen utilities while also dealing with ever changing civil and structural designs.聽Total Civil helped 爱神传媒 and the owner find solutions to move site utilities around existing active utilities, including proposing a new routing for the sanitary sewer line.

Excellence in Quality 鈥 Shickel and Rosendin Electric

On the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) Virginia Headquarters project, Shickel consistently demonstrated their high expectations of their work during the installation of both the feature and digital Walls. Shickel noted minor issues in their own work on the feature wall during installation and took it upon themselves to take down the panels and add stiffeners to ensure a final product not due to specification requirements, but because that was their own internal target. Their own high standards allowed for a seamless punch process with the client.

Rosendin Electric’s base contract for the Compass Phase 1 project was to pull and terminate into OFCI power centers, generators, vertiv A/C units, and power distribution units.聽They were also responsible for setting up load banks and associated cabling to support Level 4 and Level 5 commissioning.聽As manufacturer issues were discovered and design changes arose during this testing, Rosendin led the effort to develop over 100 Methods of Procedure (MOP) to help correct the snags.聽Each MOP was carefully developed to isolate power, ensure the electricians had the proper access and tools to perform the work, and was coordinated with the facility operations group to limit impact to the facility.

Excellence in Safety 鈥 T&A Construction and ACM Services

T&A was nominated by the Yellow Lot 02 (YEL02) team due to their understanding, alignment and execution of owner safety standards. T&A has been on site to work on point up, punch list and drywall removal/replacement and has put in much effort to remain consistent with documentation on the project. They continue to achieve consistent success in working safely and with the utmost diligence.

Nominated by the National Institute of Standards and Technologies (NIST) Building 245 project, ACM Services鈥 demolition scope of work was particularly challenging on Task Order 8 because of major descoping of work that occurred because of an owner change. ACM Services actively participated in pre-demo coordination walks, demolition permit walks and trade partner coordination meetings to work with all contractors that may be impacted by their work. ACM Services utilized different methods to minimize the impact of their work on other trades as well as the owner occupying the building at the time of demolition.聽When faced with a challenge of cutting existing bollards at the main entrance and point of access of the building, ACM worked to come up with a mobile containment tent that could keep the general public safe from the cutting operation, while allowing access/egress to the building.

Outstanding Performer, Contract less than $1M 鈥 David Allen Company

David Allen Company was a true partner on the INOVA Caf茅 and Servery project.聽Their original contract value was about $280,000, and with various changes to the terrazzo mixes and additional scope, they proceeded with work and supported the project schedule even when the changes were upwards of an additional $260,000.聽Their field crews also adapted to the various noise limitations and owner directed shut downs mid-operation without incurring cost back to the owner. The agreed estimated daily square-footage rate was 275 square-feet per day. David Allen was able to achieve 368 square-feet per day, despite many project challenges.

Outstanding Performer, Contract less than $10M 鈥 Berkel

Berkel joined the Compass Phase 2 project during the preconstruction phase to provide feedback to the A/E team to streamline design and reduce cost.聽As they were getting ready to begin the work, Berkel assigned Superintendent Gigi Marie to the project who brings a positive attitude, 30 years of experience and communication skills that set him apart from others. Gigi’s ability to plan and prepare for the project set Berkel up for success. From the regional experience and understanding of the project conditions, equipment needs were understood and communicated to the regional office. Berkel was able to pull from their resources across the country to get the correct drill rigs and casing material for a successful job.

Outstanding Performer, Contract less than $20M 鈥 Shapiro & Duncan

Shapiro and Duncan has been on the Bladensburg Bus Garage project since breaking ground. They have continued to meet or exceed schedule, coordinate well with other trades, provide valuable insight to challenges and be an overall team player. Shapiro & Duncan鈥檚 field staff goes the extra mile when it comes to safety and quality for not just their work but other trades as well. Shapiro & Duncan鈥檚 office staff is always on top of submittals, billing and MEP coordination efforts. They go above and beyond to make sure work is being coordinated with 爱神传媒 and other trades to ensure a smooth installation in the field.

Community Impact Award 鈥 Allstate Floors of DC

爱神传媒 believes in supporting the communities in which we live, build and work and supports our trade partners who share these similar values. AllState Floors of DC is a prime example of putting people before profit and providing opportunities to communities and individuals that deserve a second chance and access to the economic prosperity. With this commitment, President and Founder Jose Ortiz Gaud established the workforce readiness program Run, Hope, Work in 2014 to provide a pathway out of financial poverty for high-risk youth population. The intervention was designed to holistically reduce the number of unemployed young adults in Washington, D.C. by providing employable skills training, certifications and most importantly, jobs.

2023 Trade Partner of the Year 鈥 Total Civil Construction

爱神传媒 selected Total Civil as the 2023 Trade Partner of the Year for their ability to continue bringing innovative solutions to some of 爱神传媒鈥 most challenging projects. They have been instrumental in helping our projects progress while mitigating project challenges, all while remaining a true partner to 爱神传媒.

Almost 11 months to the day since the dive tower鈥檚 topping out, the Fort Lauderdale Aquatic Center project made a splash! In conjunction with the City of Fort Lauderdale, USA DIVING and Red Bull Cliff Diving, the aquatic center hosted a media day to highlight all aspects of the new dive tower and the facets of diving as a sport.

World champion high diver Steven LoBue and 2020 Olympian Brandon Loschiavo, along with members of the Fort Lauderdale Dive Team, USA Diving鈥檚 High-Performance Squad and Red Bull Cliff Diving were in attendance for the media day event. Steven LoBue became the first person to dive off of the new 27-meter tower, the first of its kind in the western hemisphere.

The 27-meter dive tower includes nine platform levels and combines three sporting events: springboard (one-meter, three-meter), platform diving (one-meter, three-meter, five-meter, seven-point-five-meter, 10-meter) and high diving (15-meter, 20-meter, 24-meter and 27-meter). The tower is constructed of 96 precast concrete panels and rests on a foundation five-feet deep and 53-feet wide, supported by 35 auger cast piles at a depth of 60-feet. There are 162 stairs to the top of the tower.

July 1, 2021 marked a major milestone for the City of Fort Lauderdale as its new dive tower was officially topped off. 爱神传媒 placed the final precast crown for the Fort Lauderdale Aquatic Center 27-meter dive tower, reaching its height of 101 feet above grade. This is another of many firsts for the City of Fort Lauderdale, having built the first Olympic-Sized swimming pool in the state of Florida in 1928, followed by the iconic Swimming Hall of Fame in 1965.

The dive tower at the Fort Lauderdale Aquatic Center took 360 cubic yards of concrete and 160,000 lbs of reinforced steel to build.

The two-day celebration kicked off with the City of Fort Lauderdale Mayor Dean Trantalis, City Commissioners and notable figures in the local and professional swimming community, gathering to dedicate the construction of the world鈥檚 first precast 27-meter dive tower. The special guests included World High Diving Champion Steven LoBue, FINA High Diving Technical Committee Chair and Olympian Tom Gompf, USA Diving Olympians Dave Burgering, Michelle Davidson-Sandelin, Randy Ableman and USA National Team Members David Dinsmore, Zac Cooper, Briadam Herrera, and 2021 Swedish Olympian Emma Gullstrand.聽

The following day, 爱神传媒 held a topping off celebration for the project staff with a catered lunch and multiple raffled prizes at the Fort Lauderdale Aquatic Center.

The 爱神传媒 design-build team was awarded the project in August 2018 and consists of Cartaya & Associates, Counsilman-Husaker, Gate Precast, Weller Pools, Keith & Associates, Langan, WSP, HyPower Inc, Econstruct, Southeast Precast Erectors, and Right Way Plumbing Company. The Fort Lauderdale Aquatic Center is scheduled for substantial completion in September 2022.

Renovations to the aquatic center include the demolition and construction of new swimming pools that will be FINA (F茅d茅ration International de Natation) compliant and meet the international swimming and diving competition standards, state-of-the-art 27-meter permanent dive tower, a spa, a new grandstand building and bleachers with spectator restrooms, concessions and a ticket office.聽
