爱神传媒 received national recognition, once again, for their diversity and inclusion efforts. This year, Associated General Contractors (AGC) awarded 爱神传媒 with the 2024 Diversity & Inclusion Excellence Award in the Large Contractor category in honor of their continued commitment to creating a more inclusive workplace and industry.

Judges commented specifically on 爱神传媒鈥 Culture of Care, stating, 鈥淚 love how this company has its own Culture of Care. Some companies participate in this just to check a box. It is clear this is not the case with this company. The intentional actions taken to weed out unconscious biases is something that we as an industry can learn from.鈥

In 2022 爱神传媒 launched Building Together and their Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Community (DEIc) forum. Together, these initiatives embrace the stories, unique ideas and backgrounds that every individual within the industry brings to the table. In addition to these programs, 爱神传媒 dedicates every month of the year to a different awareness topic. From Women鈥檚 History in March to Mental Health and Wellness Awareness in August, every month includes internal educational resources and external highlights that support each topic.

鈥淲e have successfully won this award three consecutive times and I am extremely proud because the judges are from our industry. That says to me that our program and our efforts are the best in the industry. I am extremely proud of our project teams, our leadership and every department within our organization because everyone contributes to our success.鈥

With over 20 years of Design-Build Institute of America (DBIA) award achievement, design-build projects continue to be an area of expertise for 爱神传媒. Since their first design-build project delivery in 1977, 爱神传媒 has completed over 460 design-build projects nationwide, with another 40 in-progress. As the nation鈥檚 cities continue to grow, 爱神传媒鈥 knowledge, collaboration and technology continues to advance, allowing them to deliver more elevated projects that go above and beyond their clients鈥 expectations. 爱神传媒 is dedicated to delivering design-build projects that evolve communities, inspire innovation and continue to change the way America builds.

鈥淐onstruction is the ultimate team sport. Successful execution from inception to operation is a win for all. This has always been the case, but it was not until we as an industry embraced design-build as a delivery method that we have truly come together in a way that optimizes outcomes for all with a project first mentality.鈥

– Shannon M. Gustine, 爱神传媒 Regional Vice President

Since receiving its first DBIA project award in 1999, 爱神传媒 has received over 60 DBIA awards. The firm continues to hold the highest amount of DBIA awards, and almost two dozen more than their second highest awarded competitor. This year, 爱神传媒 received seven DBIA awards, including Project of the Year:

1021 O Street Office Building

Receiving four total awards from DBIA including Project of the Year, the 1021 O Street State Office Building 聽is currently serving as the temporary home for California鈥檚 legislative and executive elected officials and staff while the State of California Capitol Annex is being designed and constructed. Over the long term, 1021 O Street will provide additional facilities for joint occupancy by legislative and executive branch entities. The project was the State of California, Department of General Services first Progressive Design-Build delivery with innovation a top priority for the project team which included several DBIA credential holders in leadership roles.

The innovative use of progressive design-build on the 1021 O Street project helped the team accommodate the accelerated schedule required to support the elected officials moving out of the existing Capitol Annex prior to the start of the 2022 legislative session. 爱神传媒 and its design-build partners embraced this fast-track challenge and, working closely with the State鈥檚 construction manager and criteria architect, commenced construction of the project just eight months after planning began. The result is California鈥檚 first Net-Zero Energy, Net-Zero Carbon, all-electric state office building that achieved LEED Platinum and features renewable energy, energy efficient building systems, recycled materials, natural day lighting, native vegetation and water-conserving design.

Progressive design-build takes us to the next level by eliminating waste and incorporating the right expertise at every step creating alignment and understanding resulting in exceptional outcomes. The O Street project is an excellent example, illustrating how a team can come together quickly to overcome challenges without any sacrifice to the project outcomes. It is an amazing facility we will be proud of for years to come.

The Fort Lauderdale Aquatic Center (FLAC) has emerged victorious, securing not one but two prestigious awards. With an Eagle Award from ABC鈥檚 Florida East Coast Chapter Excellence in Construction Awards and an Honor Award from DBIA Florida Region Awards, FLAC stands tall as a symbol of unparalleled achievement.

A Historic Project Unfolds

In 2018, the Fort Lauderdale City Commission awarded 爱神传媒 with a visionary $44 million design-build contract to rejuvenate the Fort Lauderdale Aquatic Complex. Aiming to draw global attention, 爱神传媒 turned this dream into reality, transforming FLAC into a world-class facility.

A Closer Look at FLAC’s Marvels

The renovations were extensive, featuring the demolition and construction of cutting-edge swimming pools meeting FINA-compliant and international competition standards. A jewel in the aquatic crown, FLAC proudly boasts the world’s second 27-meter permanent dive tower, a stunning testament to its uniqueness. The project also included a luxurious spa, grandstand building, timing room, locker room, weight room, lifeguard facility, and more, creating an all-encompassing haven for aquatic enthusiasts.

Safety at the Core

What sets this project apart is the meticulous attention to safety. Salt chlorine generators were integrated to enhance safety and minimize environmental impact. We strategically incorporated spargers and agitators, adding an extra layer of protection. The dive pool’s sparger provides an air cushion for a softer impact, while the agitator breaks surface tension, ensuring divers enter the water vertically without injury.

A Facility for the Community

爱神传媒 worked closely with the city of Fort Lauderdale to embed innovation, sustainability and memorability in FLAC’s design. The facility remained operational during construction, showcasing its importance as a community staple. Olympic swimmers, divers and even the Prince and Princess of Monaco graced FLAC, adding prestige to its monumental achievement.

National Recognition Beckons

FLAC’s excellence was acknowledged with an Honor Award from the Design-Build Institute of America (DBIA) Florida Region Awards and the prestigious Eagle Award from ABC’s Florida East Coast Chapter Excellence in Construction Awards. 爱神传媒 now sets its sights on the national stage, eyeing the ABC National EIC Awards.

FLAC’s Ongoing Legacy

Since its September opening, FLAC has received five awards, standing as a testament to innovation, architectural beauty and community impact. From inception to completion, the Fort Lauderdale Aquatic Center has evolved beyond a facility to symbolize triumph and success.

Allie joined 爱神传媒 in 2011 as a field engineer on the $72.8 million Armed Forces Retirement Home New Commons and Healthcare Center in Washington, D.C. She continued to build her experience in the Mid Atlantic Region, working on a data center and research center/laboratory before transferring to the Pacific Region in 2016. She worked as a project engineer on the Building 40 renovation at Tripler Army Medical Center before being promoted to area superintendent on the Mauka Concourse Extension at Daniel K. Inouye International Airport.

At the age of 30, 爱神传媒 promoted Allie to project manager on the $157 Kailua Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) Tunnel Influent Pump Station and Headworks Facility. It was the region鈥檚 first wastewater project and opened the doors to future work and training in the specialized sector.

鈥淎llie immediately set the tone from my first day at Waianae WWTP,鈥 said Project Engineer Maile Tufele. 鈥淚 had no previous construction experience and she coached me every step of the way. She would come out into the field and review my layout and check my takeoffs before concrete placement. Even when I moved to another project, she always called to check in on me.鈥

Training the next generation of leaders is as important as the projects she manages. She is currently overseeing the $428 million Sand Island WWTP Secondary Treatment Phase 1 project. Despite having over 100 salaried and craft workers on staff, Allie takes the time to get to know everyone. When she sees someone struggling, she takes the time to get to the root of the problem and works with them to get past obstacles.

鈥淲hen Allie became a project manager, she was my direct supervisor and made an instant impact,鈥 said Area Superintendent Kenton Shoemaker. 鈥淗er enthusiasm and energy radiated to others on the team and her lead-by-example style set the tone for expectations of everyone. What sets her apart was her humility. She was not afraid to come to me with questions about a process or project issue outside her experience and ask questions, and this hands-on, open-minded approach were fantastic examples for me to follow in my own career.鈥

For Allie, commitment to others goes beyond her day-to-day duties. From 2022 to 2023, she served as president of the Rotary Club of Windward Oahu Sunrise. During her time as president, she spearheaded donation drives for Windward Oahu schools and other youth organizations, supported the organization鈥檚 scholarship program and assisted with Adventist Health Castle鈥檚 Christmas tree lighting event. Engineering News-Record is a world-renowned magazine that provides news, analysis, data and opinion for the construction industry. In August of 2023, ENR California honored both our Southern California and Northern California Regions by awarding the University of California, Irvine Verano 8 Graduate Student Housing and the 1021 O Street State Office Building with their Best Project Award in the Excellence in Sustainability category. Only projects with exemplary sustainability practices that go above and beyond the industry norm are considered for this special award.

University of California, Irvine Verano 8 Graduate Student Housing

The new UC Irvine Verano 8 Graduate Student Housing community adds 1,055 beds for graduate students across five seven-story buildings. Verano 8 also includes a 15,996 SF community building that serves residents and the broader community with diverse social, study and event spaces. The spaces include lounges, a game room, music practice rooms, study suites, a large multipurpose room for events and lectures and a wellness/yoga room. In addition, the project includes a 10,311 SF maintenance and operations facility and a 253,442 SF, 853-stall parking structure.

The five residential buildings at Verano 8 surround the community center. They include integrated lounge spaces and have studio, two- and- four-bedroom units. The community features carefully landscaped areas, including a communal plaza, large community lawns and intimately scaled outdoor rooms between buildings. Shade structures are installed along the community’s pathways to ensure comfort for pedestrians. Additional outdoor amenities include ample bike facilities, shared barbeque areas, native and drought-tolerant plants, robust stormwater infrastructure and a hammock garden.

The new Verano 8 community was designed to address critical priorities for UC Irvine’s graduate students鈥搒pecifically affordability, community, inclusive design, sustainability and privacy. Durable, long-lasting materials and energy-efficient design measures reduce the university’s costs and translate into the ability to offer significantly lower rents for students than in the surrounding communities. In addition, social spaces such as decompression zones and communal lounges were constructed to aid students dealing with loneliness and anxiety.

The advanced facility was designed to optimize resident health and is LEED Platinum certified and Fitwel certified. Features that support student health and well-being include active stairs, biophilic design strategies and community gardens. Other sustainable practices incorporated into this project include the building organization and orientation to take advantage of environmental cooling and daylight harvesting, the use of a concrete structure that acts as a thermal mass and active solar photovoltaic generation.

Environmental Cooling

The organization of the site and buildings was optimized to capture prevailing winds to provide cooling without using energy. The residential units have purposefully designed larger operable windows to maximize ventilation.

Daylight Harvesting

The building and site orientation illuminate interior spaces with ambient outdoor light. Rooms were designed to provide balanced daylight access while minimizing heat gain and glare from low sun angles.

Thermal Mass with Concrete Structure

Using a durable concrete structure allows the building to act as a thermal mass that absorbs and releases energy due to its material and density. During certain times of the year, this can increase the thermal comfort of the residents and reduce energy use. With the large window openings, the building allows ample natural light inside. During the winter, this light will radiate into the building and warm up the concrete slab. When the sun sets and the outside temperature drops, the warmer concrete slab will radiate heat into the space, helping keep the students comfortable. During the nighttime summer months when the windows are open, the space temperature in the apartments will cool off. This cooler air will also cool the structure. As the sun rises and the temperature rises, the cooler slab temperature will continue to absorb heat from the solar radiation, providing a cooler space into the morning.

Active Solar Photovoltaic Generation

Photovoltaic (PV) panels are located on residential building roofs throughout the site to generate clean, renewable energy. PV panels are a highly visible symbol of sustainability and UC Irvine鈥檚 commitment to the stewardship of energy resources.

1021 O Street State Office Building

Situated in the heart of Sacramento鈥檚 historic government center, the new 1021 O Street State Office Building serves as the temporary home for California鈥檚 legislative and executive elected officials and staff for the duration of the Capitol Annex Project. Over the long term, it will provide additional state-owned facilities for joint occupancy by legislative and executive branch entities. The State of California, Department of General Services鈥 (DGS) led this 472,000 SF project, which rises 10 stories above downtown Sacramento and provides stunning views of the State Capitol Building.

Making the building open and inviting to the public and facilitating public involvement with the elected officials was a high priority. The pedestrian-scaled, transparent base of the building invites the community to engage in the democratic process and facilitates continued public access to legislative hearings and state representatives while the state鈥檚 Capitol Annex is rebuilt. Two levels of publicly oriented space allow constituents to participate in government through four public hearing rooms and a press room with state-of-the-art audiovisual systems to support broadcasts, overflow monitors with public seating in the lobby areas and facilities for teleconferencing with staff and constituents. The upper floors house legislative and executive offices, and collaboration spaces for more than 1,250 state employees.

The 1021 O Street State Office Building was designed and built to embody the State of California鈥檚 goals to achieve carbon neutrality and serve as a beacon of sustainability. It was constructed to stand the test of time, both in terms of its timeless aesthetic and high-quality materials. The project achieved the maximum number of LEED Innovation points for strategies including construction waste diversion, integrated pest management, green cleaning policies and low mercury lamps. An interactive dashboard in the building lobby shares live metering of climate, air quality and the building鈥檚 energy consumption and renewable energy generation. The project exceeded the State鈥檚 goals of LEED Gold and CalGreen compliance, and earned LEED Platinum and CalGreen Tier 2 certifications, all of which helped DGS achieve its carbon neutrality and infrastructure resiliency goals. The 1021 O Street State Office Building serves as a benchmark for future DGS buildings, setting a new standard for sustainability and flexibility for the State.

Design for Energy

As one of California鈥檚 first all-electric state office buildings, the design implements a rigorous approach to energy conservation. The fa莽ade plays an integral role in this approach. Conceived as a layered shell, the outer fa莽ade overlays a pre-cast/pre-glazed glass fiber reinforced concrete enclosure resulting in enhanced building insulation and improved thermal performance. The optimized fa莽ade also responds to differing environmental conditions on each face, balancing solar gain, daylight and views. Vertical fins serve as a functional framework for the entire building, creating visual continuity while providing necessary shading in Sacramento鈥檚 Mediterranean climate. As a result, almost no direct solar load reaches the glazing, resulting in greater clarity of views and deeper daylight penetration. This in turn supports a more pleasant and healthy workplace environment.

A centralized Building Management System enables real-time analysis of building performance and fine-tuning of mechanical systems including a low friction air delivery system and water to water heat pump. The building features 100% LED lighting and individual task lights, and EV-charging stations. The building is powered by 100% renewable energy through community solar agreements resulting in 103% energy savings from baseline.

Design for Water

The team took an aggressive approach to water reuse and conservation. The building鈥檚 water use was reduced by 40.65% from the baseline, resulting in 957,116.25 gallons/year savings from the baseline through low-flow fixtures, dual plumbing to accommodate future reclaimed water connection to supply toilets and urinals, and efficient treatment and reuse of cooling tower make-up. Outdoor water use was also reduced by 71% from the baseline through drought-tolerant landscaping strategies and low-flow irrigation.

Design for Wellbeing

The design enhances occupant health and wellbeing throughout the building. The high-performance fa莽ade and efficient mechanical systems maximize occupant comfort, indoor air quality, access to daylight and sweeping views. Irresistible stairs at the center of building encourage physical activity. The third-floor caf茅 serves local and healthy foods. Biophilic design elements such as lush outdoor terraces, natural materials, and a landscaped streetscape provide occupants with a direct connection to nature and the outdoors. The team selected healthy materials, including more than 50 products with Healthy Product Declarations, 150 with Environmental Product Declarations, more than 75 products with material ingredient reporting and additional low-emitting certified products.

Design for Resources

The design implemented a strategic approach to material selection, going beyond LEED v4 requirements while balancing sustainability and ecological goals with economical innovation. Conceived as a layered shell, the building fa莽ade is composed of prefabricated modular kit-of-parts and 100% FSC certified wood was used throughout the interior. Combined with cement replacement, the post-tensioned concrete slabs reduced the building鈥檚 overall embodied carbon by 9.16% from the baseline resulting in a global warming potential of 438.7 kgCo2e/m2.

Design for Ecosystems

The design amplifies biophilic benefits for occupants and the community, celebrating Sacramento鈥檚 treed urban landscape. Lush outdoor terraces interspersed on different levels of the building鈥檚 鈥淗eart鈥 provide occupants with spaces for respite and a direct connection with nature. Seventeen native valley oaks line the building from east to west, creating a vibrant streetscape that brings nature indoors through the transparent fa莽ade. The planting palette features 20 native, drought-tolerant species of trees, ferns and succulents that increase floral biodiversity and pollinator habitat. Overall, the design preserves 66% of the site as open space and integrates 9,839 SF of vegetation.

The iconic Fort Lauderdale Aquatic Center (FLAC) has held historical and cultural significance for the South Florida region since its opening in 1965. In August 2018, the Fort Lauderdale City Commission awarded 爱神传媒 with a $44 million design-build contract for the renovation of FLAC. The city imagined an updated facility that would return FLAC to its former glory as a world-renowned aquatic center.

Taken to New Heights

Through the design-build efforts of 爱神传媒, this state-of-the-art facility is now home to the United States鈥 first (and the world’s second) 27-meter permanent dive tower. With the only other permanent dive tower of this height in Zhao Qing, China, FLAC has become the only training facility in the Western hemisphere with this structure.

An International Splash

The Fort Lauderdale Aquatic Center has already made a massive impact on the South Florida community. Prior to project completion, the city received constant requests to utilize the facility for swimming, diving and aquatics in general. In January 2023, the City of Fort Lauderdale welcomed Monaco’s princely family, their Serene Highnesses Prince Albert II and Princess Charlene to celebrate the completion of the city’s world-renowned Aquatic Center following the multimillion-dollar revitalization project. This facility will now be used for national and international swimming and diving competitions from children on the Swim Fort Lauderdale team to Olympic-level professionals. With its deep history in the swimming world, several Olympians have already competed here, including Michael Phelps and Natalie Coughlin who each broke world records while competing at FLAC!

ENR Award Winner

Due to the impressive nature of this project, 爱神传媒 submitted FLAC for the 2023 Engineering News-Record (ENR) Southeast Regional Best 爱神传媒 Award. We are excited to announce that the Fort Lauderdale Aquatic Center has received an Award of Merit for the Sports/Entertainment category. Congratulations to everyone who worked on this iconic project!

With our zero-accident safety culture at the forefront, 爱神传媒 continues to take pride in their commitment and dedication to safety. As the growth of our industry and company increases substantially every year, 爱神传媒 remains focused on the wellness and safety of our people. In honor of our people鈥檚 commitment to safety, we are proud to take home three 2023 national safety awards.

爱神传媒 Wins National AGC of America Safety Awards

On March 15, Associated General Contractors (AGC) awarded 爱神传媒 with first place in the Building Division of the AGC Construction Safety Excellence Awards (CSEA). The CSEA, which recognizes construction companies who excel at safety performance, closely examines each candidate’s commitment to safety, health management and risk control. Unlike other safety award programs that limit the criteria to frequency rates, the CSEA selection process is considerably more comprehensive, and applicants are selected based on management commitment, employee participation, safety training, work site hazard identification and control and safety program innovation.

Out of the 18 first-place winners in their subsequent divisions and categories, AGC also named 爱神传媒 the Grand Award Winner of the 2023 CSEA for our outstanding safety performance. One Grand Award is issued each year and applicants are judged based on an oral presentation of their safety program. The Grand Award represents a safety culture and program that is the best in our industry. This award is a huge accomplishment for 爱神传媒 and demonstrates the hard work and dedication our people have placed into keeping our people, trade partners and projects safe.

爱神传媒 Wins National ABC Safety Excellence Award

The following day, March 16, Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) awarded 爱神传媒 the ABC National Safety Excellence Award. This award recognizes companies that exhibit a continued commitment to jobsite safety and whose safety performance and programs are judged to be exemplary by the ABC National Health and Safety Committee. Awards are based on data submitted via STEP applications, essay questions and video interviews with company presidents/CEOs/principals about their corporate safety culture. Award categories are based on a company’s total work hours per calendar year and placement within the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS codes).

爱神传媒 is grateful to our project teams, craft personnel, executives and safety professionals for their commitment, engagement, leadership and guidance in maintaining our superior safety culture!
